Latin name Pinus based on the ancient Greek name for pine pity. According to Greek mythology, the nymph Pitys was pursued by the satyr Pan, from whom there was no escape. The tall and straight pine trunks were used for centuries as a source of masts for sailing ships and for making furniture. In Eastern Europe, this tree was considered a protection against witches.
