100 years of lavender growing tradition
Lavender has been cultivated in Bulgaria for over 100 years. The climate is ideal for it. The same as for the intoxicating Damask rose, for which this EU country is famous. Already in the 1970s, Bulgaria was in a leading position in the global production of both lavender oil and lavender concrete (It is a waxy, semi-solid substance obtained by extracting flowers with a solvent, which is the basis for the production of absolute). At that time, Bulgarian lavender fields covered 70 km2 and the annual production was 155 tons of lavender essential oil and 7400 kg of concrete.
Bulgaria as a global leader in lavender oil production
In 2012, Bulgaria was once again recognized as the world leader in the production of this essential oil. The total area of lavender fields in 2021 was already 136 km2, and the total annual production is now around 400 tons. Imagine the beauty – lavender fields so large that you can’t see their end with the naked eye!
France in the background
France is also a major buyer of Bulgarian lavender oil. It is no wonder, as the lavender there was decimated by disease between 2017-2018, destroying more than 56% of the plants. The average annual French production is around 40 tons per year.
